CERAMIDES -
EFFECT ON THE SKIN

What properties do ceramides have?

Ceramides are a class of so-called lipids (fats) that occur naturally in the outer layer of the skin. They are essential for the maintenance and health of the skin barrier. Ceramides help to hold the skin cells together, similar to the way mortar binds the bricks of a house. This prevents moisture loss and protects the skin from harmful environmental influences.

How do I recognize ceramides?

Many products advertise with ceramides or a barrier complex that contains other ingredients such as glycerine in addition to ceramides. Often ingredients are also advertised as ceramides that do not even bear the name ceramide, such as various lipids that also occur in the skin. In our MY CALENDULA creams, we rely on a mixture of different ceramide raw materials. These include the three best-known ceramides, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP and Ceramide EOP. There are also other natural components of the skin such as phytosphingosine, which is a precursor to ceramides, and cholesterol, which forms the important skin barrier with the ceramides in the skin.

How are ceramides obtained

Natural ceramides are found in plants such as wheat, soybeans or rice. These are extracted from the plant and further purified in subsequent steps. The ceramides used in the MY CALENDULA range consist of many components – the origin is therefore divided into a wide variety of sources. These include palm, rapeseed, corn, sugar beet and sunflowers, for example. The entire mixture is naturally vegan.

What effect do ceramides have?

The skin barrier can be rebuilt by using skin care products that contain ceramides. Ceramides help to retain moisture in the skin, make it supple and strengthen the natural protection against pollutants and bacteria. This leads to smoother, hydrated and more resilient skin.

Further questions about the effect of ceramides

Ceramides are particularly important for people with dry, sensitive or ageing skin. With increasing age or due to external influences such as cold, heat or aggressive cleansers, the skin barrier can be weakened, making it harder to retain moisture and the skin more susceptible to irritation.

No, ceramides are natural components of the skin that are considered safe to use as cosmetic products.

Our products combine the effects of nature with a single application. As our new MY CALENDULA range is geared towards stressed skin, it was important to us to use a boost that helps exactly where it is needed. A damaged skin barrier is the first step for reddened and dry skin, and the barrier is largely made up of ceramides. Ceramides are therefore the perfect boost to underline and complement the effect of calendula.
