Face Mapping

Everyone has them and everyone would just as soon do without them. Pimples and blemishes are annoying and keep popping up despite proper skin care. Although they are annoying, they are not on our face for no reason. Pimples usually manifest themselves as a result of problems the body is struggling with internally. The causes of these problems are so varied and individual that it can take a long time to determine what is wrong with our body. One method that should simplify our search and give us possible clues is face mapping.

What is Face Mapping?

Face Mapping, also known as Skin Mapping, is a method from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM assumes that the face is the mirror of health and that energy (“Qi”) flows along invisible pathways between the organs. The face is divided into 9 areas in this form of skin analysis. These areas are in turn assigned one or more organs. So if you have acne, blemishes, or skin irritation on your forehead, this is supposed to give information about the state of your organs. Although there is no scientific confirmation for face mapping, it is a first step in getting to the bottom of the causes of blemished skin.

The forehead is associated with the liver and gallbladder in TCM. Acne, pimples and blemishes in this area may indicate that you are consuming too much fat and/or alcohol. You can improve the appearance of your skin on your forehead by drinking at least 2 liters of clear water a day and herbal tea if necessary. To avoid too much fat in your diet you should change it and focus more on raw vegetables and fruits. Since blemishes on the forehead are also caused by stress, you should try to relax more, e.g. through yoga.

The area between the eyebrows, also called the third eye, is related to your stomach and liver. If you have pimples and impurities in this area, toxins in the body and poor digestion could be the reason. To counteract this, you can help your body detoxify to rid it of harmful substances. If the cause is in the stomach, you should check your diet. Maybe you have a food intolerance or are allergic? Or maybe you consume too much alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar or milk? In our article Diet for blemished skin you will find a detailed list of which foods are good for your body and your skin and which cause acne or skin blemishes.

The outer area of the eyebrows and the temples indicate problems with the kidneys. If you have pimples or blackheads in this area, it may be that your kidneys are overworked or dehydrated. This is often accompanied by pain in the lower back. To avoid this, you should definitely drink enough fluids, preferably at least 2 liters per day. In addition, there are also foods such as kale, spinach, seaweed and berries that are good for your kidneys and strengthen them.

Do you have dark circles under your eyes, bags under your eyes or more gravel under your eyes? Then it could be that you have problems with your stomach, kidneys or liver. Again, it is advisable to pay more attention to your diet and avoid coffee, alcohol and sugar for a while. As with many other health problems, getting enough water and sleep is beneficial to help your body cope with these issues.

According to TCM, the upper cheekbones are directly connected to the heart. If you suffer from skin blemishes or acne in this area, you can counteract this with healthy fats. Healthy fats are found in avocados, nuts, various seeds, and salmon, for example. These foods promote HDL (high density lipoprotein = good cholesterol) and lower its natural counterpart, LDL (low density lipoprotein = bad cholesterol). The HDL prevents the deposition of cholesterol in the blood vessels (and thus the subsequent narrowing of the vessels) by removing the excess cholesterol.

Acne and pimples in the area of the middle cheekbones are associated with problems in the stomach and/ or lungs. Milk or white flour, among other things, can be problematic for the stomach. Allergies and intolerances cannot be ruled out here either. At this point we would again recommend the article diet for blemished skin.

Like between the eyebrows and under the eyes, pimples on the lower cheekbones also indicate problems with the liver and/or stomach. You can support the stomach with a varied and wholesome diet. You can help the liver to detoxify by using liver wraps. Toxins may be present in the body due to birth control pills or other medications (if you want to know more about birth control pills and their relation to blemished skin, read this article).

The area around the mouth is associated with the digestive tract, i.e. stomach and intestines. Here, too, the problems often lie in the diet, e.g. too much sugar, too much white flour, too much unhealthy fats. The remedy is a thoughtful diet that contains a lot of fiber (e.g. found in green juices/ smoothies) and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The jaw and the area around the chin reflect hormones. Acne, pimples and blemishes in this area indicate hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalance can have many causes, such as stopping the pill, pregnancy, ovulation or menopause.
